SRE Appeal
The education of children and young people has never been more complicated than it is today. In the classroom there have been a series of fundamental shifts over the last decade that is making the whole pedagogical process more difficult; in short, there has been a blurring of objectivity and subjectivity, and of the relationship between teacher and student and the lightning pace at which technology is changing education is frightening. Meaning and understanding is no longer fixed in texts but in the reader of texts and with the growing influence of AI it appears that the mode and manner of education is again being questioned.
All this points to the fact that SRE has never been more important for children and young people.
SRE or Scripture as it is commonly known, is an enormous privilege - we have the opportunity to send well trained teachers into schools every week to educate students who want to develop a well rounded Christian worldview. SRE provides a context in which they can think hard about themselves, their world and their God; it provides space to question the relentless drive toward subjectivity and inner authority and ask whether there is something (or someone) who provides meaning to it all.
The NSW Department of Education recognises that spiritual wellbeing plays an important role in successful learning. Students today live in this fast-changing, uncertain world, filled with confusing messages about who to trust and what to believe. SRE gives them a safe place to explore and discover the Bible alongside well equipped SRE teachers who support and guide them on their path of faith.
Scripture nurtures a child’s sense of meaning and purpose and promotes positive connections with faith and community. It provides an ongoing opportunity to answer the searching, existential questions that every child asks and Christian SRE teachers are trained to encourage every child’s natural curiosity and respond appropriately from a biblical perspective.
It is great work. Week by week, our team of teachers make connections with children and young people who are keen to learn and who sometimes don’t have the opportunity to attend a church Sunday by Sunday.
With all this in mind, starting this Sunday, we are inviting you to partner financially with us in this work. Our 2024 Scripture Appeal has begun. We offer the opportunity to partner in this work through tax deductible giving at this time of year as many people seek to manage their tax affairs.
Now, we don’t talk much about money here at Christ Church and you’d be forgiven for thinking that everything was handled by some mysterious financial partners - but all our ministry is funded by members like you and me - and that includes SRE. Thanks for your generosity and kindness in giving.
We are hoping to raise $100,000 through tax-deductible giving in June to help us fund this work this year and into the future. The money raised pays for a variety of different things including resources, training and staff costs. Jo Anne Kim is our newly employed High School SRE teacher and your giving will support her and a portion of the week for both Jesse, Pete and several other staff involved in SRE.

You will hear more about this in church over coming weeks.
Thanks for partnering with us. Thanks for your generosity. Thanks for your prayers. And thanks for supporting this crucial work of helping children and young people develop in faith.
